How to Enter God's Presence: What Worship Really Means

Last Sunday we heard from our Worship Pastor Chris Ferger, as he preached on what worship really means.

Worship is one of the most misunderstood practices in the Christian life. Many people think it begins and ends with music on a Sunday morning. But Scripture paints a much bigger picture. Psalm 100 not only calls us to enter God's presence, it shows us exactly how to do it.

Worship is not primarily about what you receive. It is about what you offer. When the children of Israel traveled to the temple in Jerusalem, they did not simply show up. They prepared. They sang songs of ascent along the way. They were already orienting their hearts toward God before they ever arrived.

Today, the Holy Spirit dwells within every believer. That means we are His dwelling place. And yet, many of us roll out of bed on Sunday morning with no preparation at all, walk through the doors, and expect to be blessed.

Psalm 100:4 says, "Enter his gates with thanksgiving and his courts with praise. Give thanks to him, bless his name, for the Lord is good, his steadfast love endures forever and His faithfulness to all generations." This is not just a nice sentiment. It is a pathway.

This is the question that cuts to the heart of the matter. In John 4, Jesus met a Samaritan woman at a well. She brought up the topic of worship, pointing out that her people worshiped in one place and the Jews in another. Jesus redirected the entire conversation.
"But the hour is coming, and now is here, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in Spirit and truth, for the Father is seeking such people to worship Him. God is Spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in Spirit and truth." - John 4:23-24

Worship is not about preference. It is not about music style, volume, or whether the sermon was to your liking. The wrong question is, "Did I like it?" The right question is, "Was God honored?"

God is not seeking consumers, critics, or spectators. He is seeking true worshipers.

These two words are often used interchangeably, but they are not the same thing.

• Thanksgiving focuses on what God has done. It celebrates His works, His provision, His protection, His salvation.
• Praise focuses on who God is. It celebrates His character. He is holy. He is righteous. He is faithful. He is unchanging.

This distinction matters because it means believers can praise God even in the middle of difficult circumstances. Your situation may change, but God does not. He is still God. The same God who took down Goliath with a stone in the hand of a shepherd boy can handle whatever you are facing this week.

Think of it like a backpack. Throughout the week, struggles pile up. Stress, worry, family tension, health concerns, financial pressure. Each one is like a rock added to that backpack. By Sunday, many people are weighed down and exhausted.

The answer is not to leave that backpack outside the church doors. The answer is to bring it in and set it at the feet of Jesus.

"Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls." - Matthew 11:28-29

Thanksgiving is what helps you set that backpack down. When you begin to thank God for what He has done, it shifts your focus from your burden to your Savior. And He is the only one who can actually fix it.

Great worship is rarely accidental. Athletes prepare. Doctors prepare. Musicians prepare. Worship deserves no less intentionality. Here are four practical ways to prepare:

Hebrews 10:22 says, "Let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith." Is there sin to confess? Someone to forgive? Something to surrender? Confession means agreeing with God about your sin. Repentance means turning from it and turning toward Him. Repentance clears the clutter from the heart.

Before you arrive on Sunday, pray. Pray for your pastor. Pray for your worship leaders. Pray for yourself, that God would speak to your heart. Expectancy is the atmosphere where worship thrives. When you come expecting God to show up, He does.

Do not wait until Sunday to open your Bible. His word is a lamp to your feet and a light to your path. The more God's truth fills your mind throughout the week, the more naturally worship flows from your heart when you gather with other believers.

Instead of asking, "What am I going to get today?" ask, "What can I offer God today?" Offer Him your attention, your praise, your gratitude, your obedience. Worship is not a performance to watch. It is an offering to bring.

Absolutely. Worship does not happen only on Sunday morning. It happens every moment of every day. You can worship on your commute. You can worship in the middle of a hard conversation. You can worship when you receive news you were not expecting.

In fact, it is often in the difficult moments that worship becomes most powerful. When a wayward child breaks your heart, when the diagnosis is not what you hoped, when the relationship is strained, how you respond to God in those moments is worship. Responding to Him with praise and thanksgiving in the middle of difficulty is one of the most profound acts of faith a believer can offer.

Psalm 100:3 says, "Know that the Lord, He is God. It is he who made us, and we are his, we are his people and the sheep of his pasture."

You cannot truly worship a God you do not know. If you have never trusted Jesus as your Lord and Savior, that is the most important step you can take. Jesus died for your sins and rose again so that you could be forgiven and brought into His presence. Life is short and none of us are promised tomorrow. Trusting Him is not something to put off.

This week, choose one day to intentionally prepare your heart before you enter any time of worship, whether that is your personal prayer time, a midweek gathering, or next Sunday morning. Confess any known sin, spend time in Scripture, and write down three specific things you are thankful God has done in your life. Then bring those with you into His presence.

Ask yourself these questions as you go through the week:

• Am I approaching worship as something I consume, or as an offering I bring to God?
• What burdens am I still carrying that I need to set at the feet of Jesus?
• When difficulty comes this week, will I respond with praise, trusting that God is still God regardless of my circumstances?
• Do I truly know God personally, or am I simply familiar with the idea of Him?

Worship is not a Sunday morning event. It is a daily response to who God is and what He has done. Enter His gates with thanksgiving. Enter His courts with praise. And do not leave the same way you came in.
