Do You Know the Real Jesus? What the Bible Says About Who He Truly Is
We live in a world full of counterfeits. Counterfeit products, counterfeit money, counterfeit identities. But perhaps the most dangerous counterfeit of all is a counterfeit Jesus. In 1 John 1:1-4, the apostle John cuts through the noise and points us to the real Jesus, the one He personally heard, saw, and touched.
Why So Many People Believe in a Jesus They Created Themselves
Our culture constantly tells us to create our own truth. Do what works for you. Believe what feels right. And if we are not careful, that same thinking creeps into our faith.
We can end up following a Jesus who agrees with everything we already believe, never challenges our sin, never disrupts our comfort, and exists mainly to make our lives a little better. That is not the Jesus of the Bible.
John wrote his letter to a community of believers who were being misled by false teachers. These teachers had created their own version of Jesus, one that did not line up with who He actually was. John's response was not a complicated theological argument. It was personal testimony.
"What was from the beginning, what we have heard, what we have seen with our eyes, what we have observed and touched with our hands concerning the Word of life." - 1 John 1:1
John was saying: let me tell you about the Jesus I actually know.

Five Things the Bible Tells Us About the Real Jesus
1. The Real Jesus Is Eternal
John opens with the phrase "from the beginning," which immediately echoes the opening of His Gospel: "In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God." - John 1:1
Jesus did not begin in Bethlehem. He was born there, but He did not begin there. Before Abraham existed, Jesus existed. Before creation itself, Jesus existed. He is not simply another religious teacher or moral example. He is God who came in human flesh.
John calls Him the Word of Life, meaning Jesus is God's ultimate revelation of Himself. If you want to know what God is like, look at Jesus.
If Jesus really is the eternal God who came in the flesh, He deserves more than our admiration. He deserves our worship, our trust, and our obedience. He deserves authority over every area of our lives.

- When Jesus welcomed sinners, we see the heart of God.
- When Jesus confronted hypocrisy, we see the holiness of God.
- When Jesus touched the hurting, we see the compassion of God.
- When Jesus went to the cross, we see the love of God.

2. The Real Jesus Is Historical
Notice how physical John's language becomes. He heard Jesus. He saw Him. He observed Him. He touched Him. This is not abstract spiritual language. This is eyewitness testimony.
John was pushing back against teachers who claimed Jesus was not really human, that He was some kind of spiritual being without a real body. John's answer was direct: that is not the Jesus we know.
The real Jesus walked on real roads. He ate real meals. He experienced real pain and real tears. He was arrested by real soldiers, nailed to a real cross, placed in a real tomb, and raised in a real bodily resurrection.
This matters enormously because Christianity is not built on wishful thinking or positive feelings. It is built on historical reality. Our faith rests on what God has done in history through Jesus Christ, not on whether we can manufacture enough spiritual emotion on a given day.
There will be days when your faith feels strong and days when you have more questions than answers. The foundation does not shift based on how you feel. Jesus is still Lord regardless of your circumstances.

3. The Real Jesus Is Personal
"That life was revealed and we have seen it and we testify and declare to you the eternal life that was with the Father and was revealed to us." - 1 John 1:2
God did not remain distant. He came near. The Creator entered His own creation. The Son of God became the Son of Man. And He did it so that we could know Him personally.
There is a critical difference between knowing about Jesus and knowing Jesus. You can know Bible verses and not know Jesus. You can know theology and not know Jesus. You can attend church faithfully and not know Jesus. You can even serve in ministry and not know Jesus.
Knowing about Jesus can change your information. Knowing Jesus changes your life.
Jesus did not come to give us better advice or to patch things up. He came to make us new. He lived the life we could never live, died the death we deserved, and rose again so that those who trust Him can have forgiveness and eternal life. We did not go looking for God. He came looking for us.

4. The Real Jesus Creates Real Community
"What we have seen and heard we also declare to you, so that you may have fellowship with us; and indeed our fellowship is with the Father and with His Son Jesus Christ." - 1 John 1:3
When you come to Jesus, you do not just get a Savior. You get a family. Christianity was never designed to be lived alone. We need one another to encourage, pray, serve, and carry each other through difficult seasons.
But here is what holds that community together. It is not shared personalities, preferences, politics, or backgrounds. The only thing that can hold people from every tribe and nation together is being centered on the person of Jesus.
When Jesus is at the center of the church, sinners find grace. Broken people find hope. Lonely people find family. Lost people find their way home. When anything else becomes the center, the community drifts.

5. The Real Jesus Brings Real Joy
"We are writing these things so that our joy may be complete." - 1 John 1:4
The world tells us joy comes from having more, achieving more, or getting our way. But that kind of joy depends entirely on circumstances lining up perfectly, and they rarely do.
The joy Jesus gives is different. It is rooted in the presence of Christ within us, not in everything around us going right. That is why you can walk through a difficult season and still have hope. That is why you can face uncertainty and still trust God. That is why you can walk through the darkest valley and still know Jesus is with you.
Jesus is not just enough for your best day. He is enough for your worst day. He is not just the Savior who meets you when you first believe. He is the Savior who walks with you all the way home.

Could a Lack of Joy Be Connected to a Lack of Sharing Your Faith?
John says he is writing so that "our joy may be complete." There is something worth sitting with in that phrase. John wanted others to know Jesus so they could have fellowship with Him. And it seems that for John, joy reached its fullness when he was actively sharing Jesus with others.
Statistics suggest that only about one percent of the American church regularly shares their faith. It is worth asking whether some of the spiritual restlessness we feel is connected to not following through on that calling. John 10:10 promises abundant life, and perhaps part of that abundance is unlocked when we begin telling the people around us about Jesus.

Five Questions to Ask Yourself About the Real Jesus
- Is the Jesus I believe in the Jesus of the Bible? Or have I created a version of Jesus who simply agrees with everything I already think? If the Word of God never challenges you, it may be worth asking whether you are engaging with the real Jesus at all.
- Am I building my faith on Jesus or on my feelings? Feelings change with a single phone call. Circumstances shift in an instant. But Jesus is the same today, tomorrow, and forever. Your faith is anchored in who He is, not in how you feel about Him on any given day.
- Do I know Jesus, or do I simply know about Jesus? Do not settle for religious information. Pursue a real relationship. Read His Word, talk to Him, worship Him, follow Him.
- Is Jesus really at the center of my life? Not just the center of Sunday, but the center of your marriage, your family, your work, your finances, and your decisions. If He is who He says He is, He deserves all of it.
- Who needs to hear about the real Jesus from me? John said, "What we have seen and heard, we also declare to you." When you have truly encountered Jesus, you cannot stay quiet about it. Who in your neighborhood, workplace, or school needs to hear?
Life Application
This week, identify one person in your life who needs to hear about the real Jesus. It does not have to be a formal conversation or a rehearsed presentation. It can be as simple as sharing what Jesus has done in your life. Write that person's name down, pray for them by name each day this week, and look for one natural opportunity to point them toward Christ.
As you do, ask yourself these questions:
The real Jesus is eternal, historical, personal, community-building, and joy-giving. He is not a doctrine to debate. He is a Savior to trust, a Lord to follow, and a King to worship. And He is calling you to know Him more deeply this week.
As you do, ask yourself these questions:
- Have I been following the real Jesus of Scripture, or a version of Him I have shaped around my own preferences?
- When life gets hard and my feelings shift, am I anchoring myself in who Jesus historically and eternally is?
- Is there an area of my life where I have pushed Jesus to the edges instead of keeping Him at the center?
The real Jesus is eternal, historical, personal, community-building, and joy-giving. He is not a doctrine to debate. He is a Savior to trust, a Lord to follow, and a King to worship. And He is calling you to know Him more deeply this week.
